Pooling many small trials is one of the best tools science has. A 2024 meta-analysis did exactly that for hydrogen water and exercise — and landed on a careful, honest middle.

## Why we read independent research first — and why you should too

Most mainstream medical research is paid for by someone with a product to protect. When the funder profits from the result, the science bends — not usually through outright fraud, but through the quiet pressures of study design, selective publication and the way results are emphasised. Decades of meta-research confirm it: industry-funded trials reach favourable conclusions several times more often than independently funded ones.

The cost of letting that bias run is not theoretical. Pain medicines once declared “safe” helped drive an overdose crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands. A blockbuster arthritis drug stayed on the shelves for years after its manufacturer saw the heart-attack signal mounting. Real products, real profits, real harm — documented in court records, not guessed at.

- **Small independent labs have no ioniser, pill or patent to defend.** Their incentive is to find the truth and publish it — not to please a shareholder.
- **The studies above come from exactly that kind of lab.** We have labelled each one's size and type honestly, included the disappointments, and linked every source.
- **Read preliminary work as preliminary.** An honest pilot study is not a sales pitch — and a sales pitch dressed up as science is not a study.

This is water, not medicine. We believe in honest inquiry pursued in good conscience: follow the evidence — and follow who paid for it.

Individual small studies can point in every direction. A meta-analysis pools them to see whether a consistent effect emerges. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in *Frontiers in Nutrition* did this for hydrogen-rich water in exercise, and its verdict is a model of nuance.

## What it combined

The authors gathered the eligible human trials of hydrogen supplementation and exercise-related oxidative stress — around 76 participants in total — and analysed them together, weighing quality and consistency.

## What they found

The pooled data suggested hydrogen supplementation could raise the body's measured **antioxidant capacity**. But it did **not** significantly reduce the actual markers of oxidative damage, nor blood lactate, nor creatine kinase (a muscle-stress marker).

> A higher antioxidant-capacity number in the lab is not the same as a proven health or performance benefit. The effect people actually care about didn't clearly show up.

## The honest take

This is the honest middle ground the topic deserves: a measurable biochemical signal, but no proof of a meaningful real-world effect, from a small pool of short studies. The authors themselves call for larger, higher-quality trials. Until those arrive, hydrogen-rich water is worth watching scientifically — and worth enjoying simply as good, fresh water — but it is not a proven supplement, and there are no authorised EU health claims for it.
