The story started with a single, striking paper. ## The 2007 study that started it all In 2007, researchers publishing in *Nature Medicine* reported that molecular hydrogen could act as a selective antioxidant, neutralising the most damaging free radicals while leaving useful ones alone. It was an elegant result — but it's important to be clear that this was a study in **cell cultures and rats**, not people. That single paper opened the floodgates. Since then, more than a thousand scientific publications have explored medical hydrogen — 1,126 indexed on PubMed by mid-2021 alone. ## What we can, and can't, say Here's where honesty matters. The great majority of those studies are laboratory or animal work. Human trials exist, but most are small and short. A 2024 systematic review summed it up well, calling the evidence **“encouraging” but “preliminary.”** There's even healthy scientific disagreement about *how* hydrogen might work — a 2014 chemistry paper argued the original “radical-scavenging” explanation is too slow to matter in the body, suggesting any real effect works through cell signalling instead. Science self-correcting, in real time. > Promising is not the same as proven. The right posture is curiosity, not certainty. ## Why fresh matters Because H₂ is such a tiny molecule, it escapes from water over hours. This is the practical case for making water fresh at the tap rather than buying it bottled: whatever hydrogen is there, you get more of it when the water is freshly made. ## The bottom line Molecular hydrogen is a legitimately interesting area of science that deserves — and is getting — serious study. It is not a proven treatment for anything, and we won't pretend otherwise. Enjoy the water for what it is: fresh, clean and pleasant to drink. ## References 1.
