A small pilot study in elite footballers found lower blood lactate and less muscle fatigue after drinking hydrogen-rich water. Encouraging — with ten people-sized caveats.

## Why we read independent research first — and why you should too

Most mainstream medical research is paid for by someone with a product to protect. When the funder profits from the result, the science bends — not usually through outright fraud, but through the quiet pressures of study design, selective publication and the way results are emphasised. Decades of meta-research confirm it: industry-funded trials reach favourable conclusions several times more often than independently funded ones.

The cost of letting that bias run is not theoretical. Pain medicines once declared “safe” helped drive an overdose crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands. A blockbuster arthritis drug stayed on the shelves for years after its manufacturer saw the heart-attack signal mounting. Real products, real profits, real harm — documented in court records, not guessed at.

- **Small independent labs have no ioniser, pill or patent to defend.** Their incentive is to find the truth and publish it — not to please a shareholder.
- **The studies above come from exactly that kind of lab.** We have labelled each one's size and type honestly, included the disappointments, and linked every source.
- **Read preliminary work as preliminary.** An honest pilot study is not a sales pitch — and a sales pitch dressed up as science is not a study.

This is water, not medicine. We believe in honest inquiry pursued in good conscience: follow the evidence — and follow who paid for it.

The exercise angle is where hydrogen water first caught public attention, and it traces largely to one 2012 pilot study in *Medical Gas Research*. It's a good example of a promising signal that has to be read carefully.

## What the study did

Ten male elite footballers drank either hydrogen-rich water or a placebo before a bout of intense exercise. The researchers measured blood lactate (a marker of muscle fatigue) and knee muscle function during and after the effort, in a crossover design so each athlete served as his own control.

## What they found

After the hydrogen-water sessions, peak blood lactate was lower, and the drop in muscle function seen with placebo was reduced. On paper, that's exactly the kind of result an athlete would want.

> But it was ten people, over single sessions, with short-term markers. A pilot study is designed to see whether a bigger trial is worth running — not to prove an effect.

## The honest take

For athletes, the fundamentals always win: sleep, sensible training load, nutrition and proper hydration. Well-hydrated muscles simply work better, and that part isn't in doubt. A later meta-analysis (covered in another note) pooled the exercise studies and found the picture more mixed. So enjoy hydrogen-rich water as an easy way to stay well hydrated around training — not as a proven supplement. Any extra effect remains an open research question, not a promise.
