In 2007, a paper in Nature Medicine suggested molecular hydrogen could act as a targeted antioxidant. It launched a whole research field — so it is worth understanding exactly what it did, and didn't, show.

## Why we read independent research first — and why you should too

Most mainstream medical research is paid for by someone with a product to protect. When the funder profits from the result, the science bends — not usually through outright fraud, but through the quiet pressures of study design, selective publication and the way results are emphasised. Decades of meta-research confirm it: industry-funded trials reach favourable conclusions several times more often than independently funded ones.

The cost of letting that bias run is not theoretical. Pain medicines once declared “safe” helped drive an overdose crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands. A blockbuster arthritis drug stayed on the shelves for years after its manufacturer saw the heart-attack signal mounting. Real products, real profits, real harm — documented in court records, not guessed at.

- **Small independent labs have no ioniser, pill or patent to defend.** Their incentive is to find the truth and publish it — not to please a shareholder.
- **The studies above come from exactly that kind of lab.** We have labelled each one's size and type honestly, included the disappointments, and linked every source.
- **Read preliminary work as preliminary.** An honest pilot study is not a sales pitch — and a sales pitch dressed up as science is not a study.

This is water, not medicine. We believe in honest inquiry pursued in good conscience: follow the evidence — and follow who paid for it.

If you trace hydrogen-water research back to its source, you arrive at a single 2007 paper in *Nature Medicine* by Ohsawa and colleagues. It is the study everyone cites, and the reason the field exists. Here is what it actually reported.

## What the study tested

The researchers worked with cell cultures and a rat model of stroke — blood flow to part of the brain interrupted, then restored. They exposed the tissue to molecular hydrogen (H₂) and measured markers of oxidative damage.

## What they found

H₂ appeared to act *selectively*: it neutralised the most aggressive reactive oxygen species — the hydroxyl radical — while leaving alone the milder oxygen species the body uses for normal signalling. In the animal model, hydrogen was associated with reduced markers of oxidative brain injury.

> This was laboratory and animal work. It is a mechanism paper — a proposed explanation — not evidence that drinking Kangen water treats anything in people.

## What it doesn't show

Two things matter. First, cells in a dish and rats after a stroke are a long way from a person drinking a glass of water. Second, the exact chemistry has been questioned: a 2014 paper argued that hydrogen does not react with peroxynitrite the way early models assumed. The mechanism is still debated.

So the 2007 paper is best understood as the spark, not the proof. It opened a serious scientific question — and, as the other notes in this series show, the human answers are still coming in and remain preliminary. There are no authorised EU health claims for hydrogen or alkaline water, and nothing here is a promise about your health.
