Here's how a Kangen machine turns tap water into five different waters. The heart of every LeveLuk ioniser is surprisingly simple to describe: filtered water, an electric current, and a set of specially coated plates. Everything the machine does flows from those three things. ## Step one: filtration Before anything else, tap water passes through the internal filter (the FC1 in current machines). It reduces chlorine and other taste-and-odour impurities — Enagic specifies over 95% initial chlorine reduction — and it lasts roughly 5,700 litres, tracked by a built-in sensor. ## Step two: the electrolysis chamber The filtered water then enters a chamber holding a stack of **platinum-coated titanium plates** — four in the compact JR IV, seven in the SD501 family, and eight in the flagship K8. A low-voltage current runs across them. Titanium is chosen for its durability; platinum for the way it drives the reaction cleanly. A membrane divides the chamber. On one side, the water becomes slightly more alkaline and picks up dissolved hydrogen; on the other, slightly more acidic. The machine sends each stream to a different outlet. > More plates generally means more surface area, and a stronger, more stable reaction — which is why the K8 sits at the top of the range. ## Step three: you choose A control panel lets you pick which water you want. For everyday drinking, you select one of the alkaline Kangen levels. For the two “strong” waters — used for cleaning and food prep, not drinking — the machine draws in a little saline *electrolysis enhancer* to push the reaction further. ## Why the plates matter The plates are the part that defines an ioniser's quality and lifespan. Enagic builds them to strict standards and backs its machines with 3–5 year warranties, engineered for well over a decade of daily use.
