After all the individual studies, where does the evidence actually stand? A 2024 review asked exactly that — with the blunt title “Extra Healthy or a Hoax?” — and gave a refreshingly honest answer.

## Why we read independent research first — and why you should too

Most mainstream medical research is paid for by someone with a product to protect. When the funder profits from the result, the science bends — not usually through outright fraud, but through the quiet pressures of study design, selective publication and the way results are emphasised. Decades of meta-research confirm it: industry-funded trials reach favourable conclusions several times more often than independently funded ones.

The cost of letting that bias run is not theoretical. Pain medicines once declared “safe” helped drive an overdose crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands. A blockbuster arthritis drug stayed on the shelves for years after its manufacturer saw the heart-attack signal mounting. Real products, real profits, real harm — documented in court records, not guessed at.

- **Small independent labs have no ioniser, pill or patent to defend.** Their incentive is to find the truth and publish it — not to please a shareholder.
- **The studies above come from exactly that kind of lab.** We have labelled each one's size and type honestly, included the disappointments, and linked every source.
- **Read preliminary work as preliminary.** An honest pilot study is not a sales pitch — and a sales pitch dressed up as science is not a study.

This is water, not medicine. We believe in honest inquiry pursued in good conscience: follow the evidence — and follow who paid for it.

It's fitting to end this series with a study that tried to sum the whole thing up. A 2024 systematic review in the *International Journal of Molecular Sciences* carried a wonderfully blunt title — *“Hydrogen Water: Extra Healthy or a Hoax?”* — and set out to weigh the human evidence fairly.

## What it reviewed

The authors surveyed the human studies of hydrogen-rich water across a range of health outcomes — metabolic, inflammatory, exercise-related and more — and assessed the strength and consistency of the evidence.

## What they concluded

Their verdict landed between the two extremes in the title. The overall picture, they wrote, is **“encouraging”** — there are real, interesting signals — but explicitly **“preliminary.”** Not a hoax; not a miracle; a genuine scientific question with promising but unproven answers.

> “Encouraging, but preliminary.” If you remember one phrase about hydrogen-water research, make it that one.

## Our position, in one paragraph

That review is, word for word, our own stance. We think the science is genuinely interesting and worth following. We also think nobody should sell it as a cure, because the evidence doesn't support that — and, in the EU, there are no authorised health claims for hydrogen or alkaline water. So we'll keep telling you what the research says as it develops, keep the disclaimers honest, and let the machines do the one thing they certainly do well: make clean, fresh, great-tasting water you'll actually want to drink.
