In Japan, alkaline ionised water is officially recognised for one thing only: easing mild stomach complaints. Here's what that narrow approval means — and what it doesn't.

## Why we read independent research first — and why you should too

Most mainstream medical research is paid for by someone with a product to protect. When the funder profits from the result, the science bends — not usually through outright fraud, but through the quiet pressures of study design, selective publication and the way results are emphasised. Decades of meta-research confirm it: industry-funded trials reach favourable conclusions several times more often than independently funded ones.

The cost of letting that bias run is not theoretical. Pain medicines once declared “safe” helped drive an overdose crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands. A blockbuster arthritis drug stayed on the shelves for years after its manufacturer saw the heart-attack signal mounting. Real products, real profits, real harm — documented in court records, not guessed at.

- **Small independent labs have no ioniser, pill or patent to defend.** Their incentive is to find the truth and publish it — not to please a shareholder.
- **The studies above come from exactly that kind of lab.** We have labelled each one's size and type honestly, included the disappointments, and linked every source.
- **Read preliminary work as preliminary.** An honest pilot study is not a sales pitch — and a sales pitch dressed up as science is not a study.

This is water, not medicine. We believe in honest inquiry pursued in good conscience: follow the evidence — and follow who paid for it.

Amid all the big claims, there is exactly one place where alkaline ionised water has a formal, official recognition — and it is far narrower than the marketing suggests. Understanding it is a lesson in reading the fine print.

## Japan's narrow recognition

In Japan, home alkaline-water electrolysers are regulated as household medical devices, approved to help improve **mild gastrointestinal symptoms** — things like mild indigestion. That's it. It is not an approval to treat any disease, and it applies specifically to alkaline electrolysed water, not to bottled "alkaline water" generally.

## What a 2018 study looked at

A 2018 study in *Medical Gas Research* followed people drinking alkaline electrolysed water in daily life and tracked their *self-reported* digestive comfort. Participants reported subjective improvement in mild gut symptoms over the study period.

> Self-reported symptoms are among the weakest forms of evidence: they're open to expectation and placebo effects. A questionnaire is a hint, not a proof.

## The honest take

Some people genuinely find that pleasant, alkaline water sits more comfortably than usual — and that's fine to enjoy. But a narrow, region-specific recognition for mild symptoms is a world away from "treats digestive disease." In the EU there are no authorised health claims for alkaline or hydrogen water at all. If you have persistent digestive problems, that's a conversation for your doctor.
